San Francisco 49'ers head coach Jim Tomsula could be joining the Washington Redskins
coaching staff, in an unspecified role, according to a report from Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee on Friday night.
Tomsula was fired after just one year as the Niners head coach and replaced by Chip Kelly. He served as San Francisco's defensive line coach under a couple of different head coaches for seven seasons before being elevated to the top job.
Tomsula might be best known for something that gets a lot of laughs on 106.7 the FAN from a television interview
he did, the day he was hired as the 49ers head coach but he is well respected and the Redskins currently do not have a defensive line coach in place.
He also has
direct ties to Greg Manusky
, who is the top in-house candidate for the Redskins defensive coordinator spot. Manusky was the 49ers defensive boss, with Tomsula on his staff, under Scot McCloughan from 2007 - 2010.
Redskins defensive end Ricky Jean-Francois was drafted by the 49ers and played under Tomsula, Manusky and McCloughan. He
tweeted something very interesting
that could connect some dots on Saturday morning.
Tomsula spent all of last year out of the NFL, as did another
Redskins defensive coordinator option, Mike Pettine.
Some other interesting names are now in the mix for the defensive coordinator position. The team is expected to ramp up the search early this week with a few interviews.
Former Saints and Cowboys defensive coordinator, Rob Ryan, appears to be one of those names and could be on the Redskins short list as a possible option to replace Joe Barry.
